Legend of the Gap

by Stephen "Doog" Duggan

Like an arrow through the Land of the Free
He led them true and fast
All praise and hail to Danny Vee
And didn't they have a blast!

Through valleys and hills they swooped and swept
Through rain and joy and grief
"We need food!" they moaned and wept
But on they rode with gnashing teeth.

They learned the skills that they would need
To best the beast in his lair
The braking, the swerving, the daunting speed
To accept this deadly dare.

Each gallant knight bore his own secret fear
Within each manly breast
Each held warm thoughts of his family dear
And trusted in the strength of the rest

Steady and inscrutable was Perry
Dogged was David through all
Glenn the Dark One was daring
And Captain Dan rode tall.

"I'll win at all costs" scowled Mike in a mood
And the Dragon trembled in fear
As trembled the feeble Old Doog
In his Quixotic tilt from the rear.

But battle they did with visages stern
On each battle-worn trusty steed
All glorious Red save for one sparkling Vern
They were the best of the breed.

At Vern's sparking pegs the Dragon did snap
When they made their daring dash
The stalwart crew made it through the Gap
Escaping the Dragon Tail's lash.

Through story and song the tales have been told
Of the feats of the VFR
But none can compare to the daring and bold
Assault on the Dragon's lair.
